The world is mourning the loss of British cosmologist Stephen William Hawking, who was born in England on the 8th<\/sup>of January 1942 – 300 years to the day after the death of the astronomer Galileo Galilei. He attended University College, Oxford, where he studied physics, despite his father’s urging to focus on medicine. He is best known for his contributions to the fields of cosmology, general relativity and quantum gravity, especially in the context of black holes. His discoveries have made the detailed study of black holes possible. Professor Hawking also published many books tackling the fundamental questions about the universe and our existence, as well as many scientific papers and lecture notes.
